<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A brace by Mechak Elia and another by Jonathan Bolingi handed the Democratic Republic of Congo a 3-0 win over Mali at the final of 2016 African Nations Championship (Chan) on Sunday at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali Rwanda.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In the presence of 35,000 spectators, 90 percent of those Congo fans, and 21,000 of them enduring the heavy downpour, Congo were applauded every minute as the side wrote history.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The script was the same on the field of play as the 2009 winners forced their way through Mali's defense from the onset.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Although on the other hand, both teams were denied their styles of play by a slippery pitch as the game unfolded under heavy downpours.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After 28 minutes, Congo got the breakthrough when Mechak Elia opened down the left wing, beating his marker before sending a powerful shot past Djgui Diarra.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Mali's attack struggled to match Congo's defense before the latter doubled their lead after 62 minutes.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The same man Elia drifted from the left, taking advantage of Mali's defensive lapse.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">He even had time to beat Djgui Diarra and shoot in an empty net, as Congo led 2-0.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Mali lost the fighting power and with 18 minutes left on the clock, Congo launched an onslaught again with brilliant passes, Jonathan Bolingi finishing in style for a 3-0 advantage.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The outfit became the first team to win two Chan titles since it's inception in 2009.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Despite being eliminated in the ongoing Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda, Uganda Cranes will be assured of walking away with $125,000(sh435m).</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;"></span><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This money is given to each team that finishes third in the group stages.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></span>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The Cranes played to one-all draw with Zimbabwe on Wednesday to finish third in Group D with two points, following another draw in their opening game with Mali.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Veteran striker Geoffrey Sserunkuuma, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored the only goal for Uganda in added time after William Manondo had given Zimbabwe a 49th-minute lead.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This was Cranes’ third consecutive time they were participating in the biennial football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) exclusively featuring players from domestic leagues.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">On all three occasions, Cranes have failed to progress beyond the group stages. The winner of the tournament on February 7 will receive $750,000 (sh2.6b) while the runners-up will settle for $400,000(sh1.39b).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Losing semi-finalists and quarterfinalists will each take home $250,000 (sh870m) and $175,000 (sh609m) respectively. The last team in each of the four groups will earn $100,000(sh348m).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Uganda v Zimbabwe result meant that Zambia and Mali, who played to a goalless draw in the other Group D game, proceeded to the quarter-finals with seven and five points respectively.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Cranes will now shift focus to the 2017 Nations Cup qualifying double-header against Burkina Faso in March.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Kampala Capital City Authority Football
Club (KCCA FC) central midfielder Ivan Ntege and defender Hassan Wasswa
Dazzo will miss Uganda Cranes clash against the Eagles of Mali on

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The two sides meet in their opening duel
 at the 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) shortly after Zambia
battle with Zimbabwe in the first game of Group D.<br />
The development follows a confirmation from the continental football
governing body, CAF that the duo will not be eligible to play on Tuesday
 as their suspensions still stand ahead of game that head coach Micho
has said is very, very important.</span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wasswa received a red card during a CHAN

holding midfielder Ivan Ntege will be out due to accrued yellow cards
over two legs during the qualifiers.</span></span></div>

</span></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Despite this blow, coach Micho has said that he has 23 players in camp who are all well prepared for any challenge.<br />
“We are prepared physically, technically and mentally. Anybody on the team among the 23 players who traveled can play,” the Serbian remarked.</span></span></div>
